Wisdom Teeth Removal Step-by-Step

Wisdom tooth removal is a very straightforward procedure. Most surgeries can be completed in our Amarillo office in less than an hour.

Anesthesia

Our doctors will administer local anesthesia to numb the areas around the wisdom teeth.

Incisions

Dr. Pendergrass or Dr. Wilkie will then make small incisions over the impacted teeth.

Extraction

Our doctor will then extract the tooth. In some circumstances, the tooth will need to be broken into smaller pieces.

Sutures and Gauze

Our doctor will close the incision with dissolvable sutures and place gauze over the extraction site.

Wisdom Teeth Recovery

When it comes to wisdom teeth removal, many patients are most concerned about the recovery process. When you choose our practice in Amarillo, our doctors will provide clear recovery instructions and set you up for success so that you can return to business as usual as soon as possible.

For the first few days after surgery, you will likely experience some swelling around your face. You should apply ice packs periodically to manage discomfort and keep the swelling down. During this time, you should also limit your diet to soft foods and liquids.

We can provide you with a prescription for oral pain medication, but over-the-counter painkillers are often sufficient after the first day or so.

For a few weeks, you will need to be cognizant of keeping food and other debris out of your empty tooth sockets. We will show you how to clean the sockets so that you don't develop an infection.

While the recovery process can cause some inconvenience for a few weeks, the benefits of the surgery far outweigh the costs. You may be sore for a few days, but that's better than potentially losing your teeth in the future!

Wisdom Teeth FAQs When should my teen have their wisdom teeth removed?

We all develop teeth at our own pace. While some patients are ready for wisdom teeth removal as young as 17, others may never need to have their wisdom teeth taken out. Dentists will usually recommend wisdom teeth surgery after looking at x-rays of a patient's bite, so it's important for teens and young adults to attend regular dental checkups. That way, they can have their wisdom teeth removed before they start to cause problems.

Do I need to call an oral surgeon?

Not necessarily. Dentists like Drs. Pendergrass and Wilkie are just as qualified to remove wisdom teeth as any oral surgeon. Our Amarillo doctors are able to handle simple or complex wisdom teeth extractions.

Do the wisdom teeth need to be replaced?

No. Humans don't actually need a third set of molars. Removing the wisdom teeth can only improve your dental function. There is no need to replace them.
